A Course in Miracles

A Literary Phenomenon That has Affected the Lives of Many Thousands of People

‘A Course in Miracles’ is published by the Foundation for Inner Peace. Authors and speakers like Marianne Williamson and Wayne Dyer have contributed to its popularity, and have helped to make it accessible. It is essentially a self-study curriculum that guides students toward shifting their focus from an external world that they are at the effect of to an internal one where they are cause of their own experience. ‘A Course in Miracles’ (also referred to as ‘ACIM’) accomplishes this shift by restoring a student's contact with what it calls the Holy Spirit, which we define in broad terms as being the awareness that transcends personality or ego identification.

On one level ‘A Course in Miracles’ is a restatement of the core of wisdom found in every major world religion. However, the course clearly identifies itself as a “teaching device” rather than as a religion. Its aim is to “remove the obstacles to the awareness of love’s presence” within our minds, and it is this goal that Clearmind aligns with. It suggests that we all have a choice to operate from a fear-based, reactive, defended level of consciousness, or an open, proactive, love based consciousness, and that this choice determines our perception and experience.

‘A Course in Miracles’ attempts to show us that our usual perception and sense of identity are distorted. It offers us a way of correcting these distortions by becoming aware of love’s constant presence within, and using this awareness as a base from which to perceive and make decisions. This shift in perception is what the course means by a ‘miracle’. A ‘miracle’, then, is a change in how we see our circumstances, which may or may not be reflected through an external shift in the circumstances themselves. Either way, our experience of life is forever changed.

ACIM makes no claim of superiority over any other teaching, but clearly states that it is only one of many thousands of forms of “the universal course” that can be used for personal transformation. It does suggest, however, that serious students may progress faster by applying its principles in their daily lives.

clearmind transpersonal painting acim The language of ‘A Course in Miracles’ is extraordinarily rich and profound. Many have reported experiencing difficulty with the language of ACIM, which uses some traditional Christian terminology in non-traditional ways. However, more important than how it is said, is what it says. The thought system of the course is intellectually sophisticated and combines spiritual inspiration with deep psychological understanding of such phenomena as belief and defense systems, perception and identity. ‘A Course in Miracles’ appeals to many different levels of mind, both conscious and subconscious.

Unlike some other thought systems, ‘A Course in Miracles’ does not suggest withdrawal from the world. It teaches that our various relationships offer us unique and valuable opportunities for learning, awakening and healing, for both self and the world. We act out our beliefs about love and ourselves in relation to love with significant others in our lives, and thus we can use what can cause pain to heal rather than harm. The course offers a sophisticated analysis on the dynamics of relationship in all its various forms, and considers them to be the activating agents for change.

Transformation of the self in relationship is accomplished through the constant practice of forgiveness. Forgiveness is the means by which we can release the past, with its burden of guilt and grievances. ACIM considers all behavior to be either a call for love, or an extension of love. When we can see the “call for love” under difficult behavior, forgiveness naturally occurs, and we are left in a state of compassion rather that locked into anger, fear, or guilt. It is our compassionate mind than can then make proactive decisions which result in a more positive life.
