P.R.A.C. for Life Counsellor Training Level 2 - Course Content

P.R.A.C. for Life Level II (also referred to as “Prac 2”) continues the journey by shifting the focus to the interpersonal therapeutic dynamic. We discover what it means to be of service, to teach ourselves who we really are by supporting another.

Here we learn the ‘how to’ of therapy, drawing from humanistic and experiential therapies such as person centered, gestalt, NLP, and integrating these with the latest body/mind perspectives. Being of service to others fosters interdependent consciousness, the awareness that another’s interests are truly no different from our own, and through this consciousness we continue to expand and grow ourselves.

Students re-write their autobiographies this year, with a focus on uncovering the clues to their unique calling or life purpose, and revealing the skills they have learned along the way. The most effective tool any therapist has is themselves, and we continue the process of exploring self in relationship through learning:

  • Transpersonal Systems Theory
Transpersonal (spiritual) psychology is synthesized with systems theory as a cohesive model for counselling. Individual process and development is examined within a transpersonal context.
  • Therapeutic Stance: Interviewing and Counselling skills
Basic interviewing and counseling skills are taught, including session structure, listening skills, interventions and techniques. Genograms are reviewed as client assessment devices. The focus is on how to responsibly create a healing relationship, and to act as an agent of change.
  • Experiential Therapies: Person Centered Therapy
Person Centered Therapy is reviewed from a theoretical and applied perspective. Recent developments in Person Centered and Humanistic therapies are discussed, and students practice techniques.
  • Experiential Therapies: Gestalt Therapy
Gestalt Therapy is reviewed from a theoretical and applied perspective. Recent developments in Gestalt and Experiential Therapies are discussed, and students practice techniques.
  • Neuro Linguistic Programming
Neuro-Linguistic Programming is reviewed from a theoretical and applied perspective. Recent developments are discussed, and students practice the techniques.
  • Spiritual Emergency and Altered States of Consciousness
The role that altered states of consciousness have played in human spiritual development is examined within a historic context, and the potential for these experiences to be used therapeutically is explored. The possibility of viewing emotional distress as a ‘spiritual emergency’ or ‘dark night of the soul’ is presented, including how to approach these experiences therapeutically.
  • Boundaries and Ethics in the Helping Professions
Boundary and ethical issues are discussed in detail, and students are encouraged to think their way through various common ethical dilemmas
  • Common Issues in Psychotherapy
Various common issues in psychotherapy are examined, including depression and suicide risk assessment, addictions and assessment, trauma, and grief and bereavement counselling.
